Tasmanian builder licences and practitioner accreditation, mapped clearly.

In Tasmania, Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) licenses builders and accredits building practitioners. Tasmania combines a builder licence with building practitioner accreditation, so the two run together rather than separately.

What you need to know

How builder licensing works in Tasmania.

Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) administers Tasmania’s Occupational Licensing and building practitioner framework. Tasmania is a practitioner-accreditation state: builders, building surveyors, designers and others are accredited in categories and classes, and a builder licence sits on top of that accreditation. The qualification and experience needed depend on the class of building work — from low-rise residential up.

Licences we can help with

What are you applying for in Tasmania?

Start with the work you want to quote, contract or supervise. We’ll line up the likely class, supporting evidence and place to begin.

Builder licence & accreditation

A Tasmanian builder licence rests on the right building practitioner accreditation class. We map the class to the work you contract and the evidence CBOS accredits against.

View this service

Trade / restricted builder pathway

Restricted and trade-specific building work carries narrower accreditation classes. We check which class matches the work you actually do.

Building practitioner (supervisor) accreditation

Tasmania accredits the practitioner behind the work. Where supervision is the role, we position the accreditation category rather than a full builder licence.

Mutual recognition into Tasmania

Accredited or licensed elsewhere? Mutual recognition can carry an equivalent Tasmanian accreditation — we check the class CBOS will recognise.

How BLS helps

Get the application work under control before you lodge.

We identify what needs to be gathered, fixed or prepared, then organise the application into clear steps.

01

Map the right pathway

We start with the work you want to do and the state you want to do it in, then map it to the relevant regulator, licence type, class and likely application sequence.

02

Build the evidence plan

We review qualifications, RPL needs, project history, referees and records before you spend time or money on the wrong next step.

03

Prepare the application

You get practical support preparing documents and building a clearer application pack before lodgement.

Independent support

CBOS decides every application.

BLS focuses on what we can control: the right class, clear evidence and properly prepared application material. CBOS assesses the application and makes the final decision.
